Scott, Wendy, and I finally made it back from our 3 day excursion to see Petra. Scott, Wendy, and I finally made it back from our 3 day excursion to see Petra. We encountered a whole new level of Israeli security (more about that later), saw the beautiful city of Eliat on the southern tip of Israel, and experienced the full and complete distinctive of the Arab culture.
Our trip began the morning after the rest of the group headed home. We flew to Eliat early in the morning to cross the boarder into Jordan. Our transition into Jordan was fairly smooth and uneventful. However, it was not long before we knew we were in an Arab country…and that was a new experience. Our Jordanian tour guide met us at the boarder to take us to Wadi Rum which is a beautiful, yet rugged, Jordanian desert wilderness. It is the location where much of Lawrence of Arabia was filmed. Wadi_rum.jpg
We encountered numerous camels, Bedouin tea time, and a wild Jeep ride. We also learned from our tour guide that Jordanian Bedouin men are allowed up to 4 wives. Our guide was surprised to learn that we were not attracted to that idea. Scott and I explained to him that keeping up with our one wife each was quite enough. Although, we did have some fun with this discussion. Our trip was often interrupted by one of four Muslim calls to prayer which are broadcast in every city, town, or village from all the Mosques. It was a very unusual experience.
The next day we walked into Petra to view the magnificent stone carvings of the ancient Nabataeans. It was absolutely incredible to view this preserved and protected city. petra.jpg
One of Scott’s main desires in going to Petra was to leave behind a carefully wrapped Bible in the crevices of the rock. The idea being that the Jews who will flee to Petra in their escape of the coming persecution of the tribulation would find this copy of Scripture to give them light and hope in their restoration. Wendy and I laughed uncontrollably as Scott paused at one of the large “king treasury” structures to chuck his gift up into one of the unreachable rooms high above the ground. All the while trying to avoid tourist attention. It was both meaningful and fun.
After returning to Israel later that day, we checked in to a hotel in Elait for our final night’s stay. The next day we snorkeled the Red Sea, packed and showered, and headed off for a looooong night’s travel home. We were detained at the airport in Eliat and questioned for our trip to Jordan. Now, don’t get me wrong. I completely understand and support Israel’s high degree of security. We were fully cooperative. But, man were we given the third degree. Due to a couple of questionable answers to their questions about our trip to Jordan, they decided to make sure we were not a threat. Our entire luggage was stripped and unpacked while everything was tested exhaustively for any dangerous residue. After 50 minutes of interrogation, we were finally released to travel. Just when we thought we were home free in the Tel Aviv airport, I was selected to be the recipient of more scrutiny. I was stopped, searched, and questioned again to ensure I was not a threat to Israeli safety. I was even told that one of my carry on packages (two Bible atlas books that I purchased) tested positive for dangerous residue. That was strange since they had remained in the back since their purchase. But, I did not argue (having been in security I know better). We all made it home safe and sound.
This entire trip has been life changing. We carry with us unforgettable memories and precious experiences to help us in our walk of faith. We also have a deeper passion for God’s Word and the truths found in it. The Bible is more alive for us today than it ever has been before. May the Lord continue to bless Israel with the increased settlement of their land. I pray for their safety and their peace.

CROSSOVER IN THE LAND - DAY 9 tag:travellerspoint.com,2009-06-04:/blog/?domain=budwenzel&thisblog_entryid=19&entryid=163306 2009-06-04T20:29:02Z 2009-06-04T20:28:38Z Today was the larger group’s last day in Israel. This is about the time people really begin missing home. Family, loved ones, and priorities at home begin to call us…and yet, there is part of everyone that wants to stay here. Israel has an unexplainable draw to the genuine believer. After all God does always have His eyes on this land. How special it has been to see the gates from Abraham’s day, the caves that David hid in when learning to trust completely upon God, float on the water that Jesus walked on, and stand on the holy Temple Mount where one day Jesus will literally reign as King. Who would ever want to leave all that. And yet, God has much planned for us in our everyday lives. That is what we have learned all about here in the Land of the Bible. We are to live with such conviction and commitment in our area of influence just like the Children of Israel were trying to do in this land.
The day began in a very somber and meaningful way. We visited Yad Vashem which is the holocaust museum here in Jerusalem. It was so much more meaningful because our guide (Gilla) shared with us in a very personal way. Her Mother is a survivor of Auschwitz. She was very tender and transparent with us as she shared what it is like for survivors and their families. We all wanted to just wrap her up in our arms and say, “I am so sorry”. We all feel that much closer to not only Gilla, but all the Jewish people as they struggle to experience new life and hope. The museum was truly moving for all.Thursday_051.jpg
After lunch we moved to the close of our journey. How fitting it was to end up at the Garden Tomb where it is believed that Jesus was raised from the dead. The site Golgotha (skull hill) was also attached to this very site. Whether this was the actual historical location or not was not quite so important to us. The fact that Jesus is no longer in a grave but walked out of one just like it was very important to us. Thursday_052.jpgWe celebrated the Lord’s Supper right there at the site and sang a short but sweet hymn. I think we were all renewed in our deep love and appreciation for what Jesus has done for us. Words cannot adequately express our sense of aching desire to serve the Lord out of our immense gratitude.
The day ended with a sharing time. It was especially sweet to express our thanks to Gilla. We have really grown to love this special lady. “Gilla, I think your dog is calling…she wants to go out again!” Well, I guess you had to be there for that one. We ended with lots of deep reflection, lighthearted bantering, and lots of laughter. This was an incredible trip! Thank you all who went and sought after God with all your heart. May He bless you richly with the precious physical experiences and lasting memories. Thank you all who prayed and supported us while we were here. May the Lord bless you in sharing through our testimony. Thank you to my precious wife and daughters who have gone through a very difficult 9 days. May the Lord bless your sacrifice with the knowledge and mystery of His will. Mostly, thank you Lord for being absolutely faithful. God is worthy of our entire and complete devotion. The land and all that it holds reminds me of that every time I am here. Jesus is coming soon. We must be found faithful.

Watch for updates and more blog about our smaller group extension to Petra in Jordan. I will be taking Scott and Wendy tomorrow morning first thing. Scott is really excited!

One of my goals for this trip was to make sure that I spend much more time on the Temple Mount than I had on previous trips. Our wonderful guide, Gilla, got up early to take us so that we could have a full 2 hours walking around up there.
After making our way through security (which I will tell you more about), we finally arrived at the very top of the existing Temple Mount. It was a very powerful and informative time for all. We asked lots of questions about what was where. We tried to place everything as it would have been during the different periods of time. One of the highlights was seeing an original stone step that led up to the upper court of the sacred or “holy area”. This is how they would have accessed the sacrifice altar, brazen laver, and other inner court activities. What an experience to look at the very spot where God revealed Himself in a special way among His people. On a personal note, I think I finally have the Holy of Holies placed!
One very interesting observation about the current Muslim presence on the Temple Mount. I want to speak to the growing voice of those who are less educated about the Temple Mount and its’ true history. There is a thought among many Americans today that this should be a special and holy site for all faiths. In other words, we should not be so exclusive to consider this place as only sacred and relevant for the Jews (and Christians). These people speak as though the poor Muslims should be allowed to have access to their holy sites up there…I mean, after all don’t they let everyone else worship on this sacred place? The answer…NO! I found it very interesting that the Muslims who control the Temple Mount do not allow certain things to take place there. Out of all the things I could have tried to bring up on the Temple Mount, it was my Bible that I was prohibited from taking up there. Yes, you heard me correctly…my Bible! The check point screening area complete with an airport scanning machine has been placed before the entrance to look for Bibles. I cannot pray up there either, but the Muslims have two Mosques’ for their place of prayer. It seems they are not very open to “all faiths sharing that place”. Also, if it is so sacred to them, why have they completely trashed it? There is garbage and debris everywhere. It really made me sick to my stomach to see such disdain and contempt for a site that is holy to the Jews and Christians…but only claimed holy by the Muslims. Oh, by the way, it is also very interesting that all the Archeological finds on and around the Temple Mount from before the Hasmonean period are distinctly Jewish. Israel may not have much history as an U.N. recognized State, but they have all the history there is as a nation who belongs in this land. No matter what people say, feel, or think, this specific piece of land was given by God to the Jews for exclusive Worship of the one true God. The rest is irrelevant.
Well, back to the trip. We went from the Temple Mount to the pools of Bethsaida where Gilla sang to us Psalms in Hebrew at a church with amazing acoustics. It was beautiful. We were all speechless. A couple of people commented later that they could have just sat there and listened to her sing that all day. I agree!
Most of the rest of the day was spent walking every square foot of the surroundings of the Temple Mount. We walked the Rabbi’s tunnel along the western wall, saw the excavated first century community along the southwest corner, worshipped on the southern steps, and watched a video about temple worship.
After a short rest at our hotel, we headed back to the southern slope of the mountain of the temple mount which is the city of David. It was cool to see discovered evidence of the presence many of Israel’s Kings. I guess Israel has much more history here than many people realize. A few brave souls walked Hezekiah’s tunnel which is a water way dug out by King Hezekiah to re-route the water of the spring of Gihon. Larry, Greg, Wendy, and Deana walked the entire 2/3 of a mile in the pitch black with water up to their knees in a very tight and narrow passage way under ground. Terry has affectionately labeled this group the Crossover Swim Team. We all met up at the pools of Siloam to see yet more evidence of the Biblical tie to this land. What a great day! It was very hot, and I think there were a few times where the heat took the energy out of people. However, this journey is surely changing lives.Wednesday_002.jpgWednesday_013.jpgWednesday_020.jpg

There is a Jewish saying that once you come to Jerusalem you will never be the same. This is never more true that with a group of believers who love God and His Word. As we learned from one Jewish man today, coming to Israel is about you encountering God. It seems as though the people in our group encountered God in a very unique way today. We began the day by visiting the actual site of the judgment chamber of the Antonia fortress where Jesus was tried and beaten before Pilot. It was the most moving experience to sit on the cold stones that literally beheld our cruel treatment of the Lord Jesus as He took our sin judgment on Himself. Leaving that room we walked the Via Delarosa (the way of suffering) which is a good chance to stop and pause along a proposed site of Jesus walk to Calvary. The hustle and bustle of the market place atmosphere added an element of authenticity.
After lunch (pizza in Old Town Jerusalem), we stopped by the small Judaic shop of a man I am learning to love more and more with each visit. He closed the door and gave us some individual time to talk about the genuine misunderstandings and differences between Christianity and Judaism. He also had some commentary on the church today that was extremely insightful. Wow! I think we were all so amazed at what a kindred spirit we feel with godly and sincere practicing Jews. God is surely drawing us together.
The last place we went to was Caiaphas’ house. This is the High Priest that sent Jesus to be tried by the Romans. It was also the place where Peter denied the Lord three times. We had a very clear view of all the places that Jesus walked to in the last 24 hours of His life. It was a very sobering experience.
We ended the day back at our hotel with a lecture from Susan Marcus who is a friend of mine (the guide that led my last two tours). She talked to us about modern day events and Israel’s recent history. She also allowed the group to ask any question they have ever wanted to ask a Jew. It was also very informative. We had a wonderful time with her.
Tomorrow is huge! We will take the group up early for an extended visit on top of the Temple Mount. Again…life changing.Tuesday_001.jpgTuesday_003.jpgTuesday_008.jpg

Monday_001.jpgMonday_004.jpg
We then, walked down the Palm Sunday route as Jesus would have when he descended the Mount of Olives stopping half way to weep over the city of Jerusalem. We took some time to trace his route. Then, we had the blessing of hearing from Scott as he shared why he and Wendy are going on an extra trip extension at the end of our tour. It all has to do with the Israelites escaping the coming destruction in the tribulation and going to Petra (or Bozrah) in Jordan. He made some amazing connections about the route that they will take and why all this will happen. It was so cool to see Scott verify his convictions based on the Geography. He and Terry then talked about the Olivet Discourse and the implications of a compromised state to our church age today.
From there we went to the Garden of Gethsemane where we had some time to sit among the ancient olive trees to pray and reflect on Jesus’ agonizing in this place of “pressing”. Wow, it was so incredible to sit and reflect on the depth of Jesus’ love for us knowing that He would experience that temporary separation from the Father on the Cross. This was a meaningful time for all.
Monday_005.jpgMonday_006.jpg
We ate lunch in a cafeteria at the world famous Hebrew University. It was good to get an espresso and/or cappuccino (some got the kind with ice cream in it, but I won’t say who). After a brief stop in a beautiful olive wood carving shop, we headed for the Museum of Israel. Everyone absolutely loved the 1/50 scaled model of the city of old Jerusalem. It really helped put everything in context. Some of the ladies were just so thrilled to make some connections from a recent Beth Moore Bible study they did about the Psalms of Ascents. I love it!!!
Monday_010.jpgMonday_012.jpg
The last stop was the Shrine of the Book where the Dead Sea Scroll parchments are on display. It was a real treat for a group that is full of people who love Scripture. The day ended a little early for some much needed rest. Tomorrow holds some very powerful experiences for us. Stay tuned…

I just want to start out this blog entry by saying that this is such a wonderful group of people to travel the Holy Land with. They are so intent on their relationship with the Lord…they love the Scriptures…and they are eager to learn. I think Gilla (our tour guide) has really enjoyed teaching our group because of their desire to learn. She has been such a blessing to us as well.
Our first visit this morning was Masada. Of course, this 41 acre fortress at an elevation of 1500 feet is historically significant. It was the site of the last stand of the Jewish zealots as Jerusalem and Israel fell to the Romans in 73 AD. But, the group was also pleased to discover that this place is also the source of Jewish pride and resistance to opposition. I believe the people from Crossover church have received a new sense of encouragement to remain strong and unwavering in the face of cultural compromise. I look forward to hearing of how this trip has given this small group a vision to share with the rest of the body.
Our second stop one of my personal favorites. We hiked up to the spring of En Gedi. It is a desert oasis that is fed by a spring in the middle of lifelessness. En Gedi means the spring of the goats because it is the favorite home of the Ibex (indigenous wild goats). You can read in the Bible that this is the very site that David found King Saul doing his business in a cave. David cut off a piece of Saul’s garment and spared his life. It is also the place where David was hiding out from Saul and wrote several Psalms. We had a great time of Psalm reading and reflection. These goats have been hanging around this spring for over 3000 years, but we did not get to see any of them today. However, our incredible bus driver was determined to find one for us on the drive to lunch. Sure enough, he found one along the side of the road as we drove away. God is so gracious!
As we began our ascent to Jerusalem I paused asking everyone to think about what they were about to experience. The atmosphere on the bus was a unique reverence balanced with anxious anticipation. Then, we crested the top hill of Jerusalem to see the city of God. I cried all the way up the last third, and most of the people joined me by the time we saw the temple mount. We broke bread with Gilla (our guide) and Aaron (our driver) who are Jerusalem residents. Then, we stood in awe at the most incredible site you have ever seen. There were tears, laughter, and even some anger at the dome of the rock sitting on God’s spot. Ahhh, what a day.
We will be taking a brief walk on Ben Yahuda Street tonight to see some authentic Judaic shopping. Everyone is doing great. Shalom.Sunday_001.jpgSunday_003.jpgSunday_008.jpgSunday_014.jpgSunday_019.jpgSunday_022.jpgSunday_021.jpg

We started out this morning heading south along the Jordan River towards the Dead Sea. Our first stop along the way was at the ancient city of Bet Shean. This is primarily a Roman site that was destroyed by an earthquake in around 749 AD. However, we did hike up a steep hill to see the old Canaanite version of the city where King Saul and his son’s bodies were hung from the city wall. It was quite a bit of work out to get up to the top, but it sure was worth it. It also gave us a chance to work off some of all that ice cream we have been eating. Hey, your loved ones have just been forcing me to eat all this ice cream every day (really honey, its true!) Well, ok so maybe I have created a bunch of ice cream monsters.
We headed south toward the Dead Sea stopping at where we think Gilgal might have been. This is the spot between the Jordan River and Jericho where the children of Israel stopped after crossing over into the promise land. It is a highly significant site for the Crossover group because it is the event that the church is named after. We got out of the bus and walked into a rocky desert spot where Terry talked about the place being where the children of Israel left behind their past. This is where God rolled away the reproach of their shame and hopelessness (Gilgal means to roll away). He then challenged everyone to continue moving forward in faith and obedience. We prayed, picked up rocks, and headed on further south.
The next stop was at Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. I don’t think the people really expected very much from this stop…but there were surprised. After eating lunch, walking through a nice little gift shop and museum, we walked out the back door to see the actual site of the Essene community. We walked through the ruins of the site and stood face to face with the actual caves the scrolls were found in! They were about 50 feet from us. Everyone was deeply moved by this.
Today was really hot. We ended it by a nice relaxing float in the Dead Sea and a great dinner in a super plush resort hotel. We will be here for one night and then on to more desert discoveries tomorrow.
Here is my contact information in case there is an emergency or you need to get a hold of someone one here on the trip. 052 280-6127. You will have to dial internationally to Israel so check with your local operator to find out how.
Everyone is doing very well. There have been no problems. And of course, all of our friends and loved ones are missed very much. Keep praying!Saturday_003.jpgSaturday_006.jpgSaturday_020.jpgSaturday_014.jpg

After an early start we departed for the Mount of Beatitudes. This is considered to be the site where Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount. The first thing we did there was gather in a beautiful garden like setting of the site to talk about the Scripture passage. After talking about the Jewish nature of Jesus’ teaching and His magnificent claim of deity, I turned everyone’s attention over to Terry for a few comments. He added his own enlightening perspective in talking about how Jesus was challenging the status quo and religious emptiness of His day. Terry then asked the group to gather around me to pray for me as I am going through some very personal difficulty. I can’t tell you what a blessing it was to be surrounded by people who absolutely love the Lord like that. They prayed for God to strengthen and bless me to continue to persevere in the face of persecution. They encouraged me to remain unwavering and committed to teaching and relying upon God’s Word. It was a special time for all us. The group then took some time to walk the garden and reflect upon their own lives asking the question, “What does Jesus say to me?” (“But I say to you…).
From there we went up to the Golan Heights. The first stop was the ancient city of Dan. I think everyone was really surprised at how much Biblical context this place had. We saw the altar that Jeroboam built to provide a “substitute” for true worship, the city walls and gate from the time of King Ahab, an actual judgment seat at the city gate from the Northern Kingdom, and a 4000 year old Canaanite gate that Abraham surely walked through. This gate was definitely the highlight for everyone. You could hear the gasping in awe as people pondered this place and what happened here. Scott was absolutely amazed to see the actual size of an exact replica of the altar that Jeroboam built. Ron was able to sit at the city gate where the “elders” would sit and govern. And of course, we got ice cream.
The next site was Caesarea Philippi where Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do others say that I am?” We saw how when Jesus said that the “Gates of Hades shall not prevail” against His church, He was talking about an actual place of pagan Pan Worship called the Gates of Hades.
After a nice authentic Middle Eastern lunch, we headed up for a nice view of the Golan Heights and into Syria. Mike was so taken by the view and an Israeli tank that we almost left without him (well, actually we started to leave to freak him out). You should have seen his face. The whole bus was laughing.
The day ended with the Crossover group going down into the Jordan River to get 12 memorial stones. This was an unplanned excursion that really tested the driving skills of Aaron our driver. He got us down close to the river where buses don’t usually go. You will more about those stones when everyone gets back.Thursday_035.jpgThursday_045.jpg

Our tour guide (Gilla) told us that it was one of the clearest days you can have on the Lake. It was amazing! We worshipped while listening to Chris Tomlin and then had a small devotional about following Jesus with complete abandonment while floating in the middle of the Sea of Galilee. Everyone was so thrilled to experience this. We landed further up-lake where we saw a 2000 year old fishing boat that was recently discovered in buried in the mud of the shore. It was a fishing boat from Jesus’ time. The place that housed the display of this boat also had a delightful shop with lots of souvenirs and trinkets. Perhaps the most serious and meaningful time was when some of my brothers joined me in having some of the world famous strawberry ice cream! It was truly a spiritual experience. I am still trying to convince them that this ice cream is made with real “manna” (not so sure they are buying it…their wives surely aren’t).
After that we moved to site where Peter was restored by Jesus after the resurrection. We had some time for Pastor Mike Erickson to read John 21 while we all meditated on God’s true forgiveness and restoration. The whole group took this opportunity to get their feet wet in the lake. Many of them pulled out rocks to take home as mementos to help them remember this meaningful experience.
Our next stop was at the city of Capernaum. This is the city of Jesus’ home base for his ministry in the Galilee (which was about 80% of His ministry). We saw Peter’s Mother-in-law’s house, the ruins of the city, its commerce section, the synagogue where Jesus was sure teach at. Everyone was so awestruck that we could hardly get them back to the bus. I think it was only the promise of lunch that got them all moving. What an awesome place! I kept hearing people say, “just think, Jesus was right here teaching God’s Word and healing people”.
Our lunch was very special today as we had “St. Peter’s Fish. It is a fish that is indigenous to the Sea of Galilee that is cooked whole…fins, eyes, and all! The only brave souls were Ron Pearson and Scott Liddell. Most of the other fish eaters stuck with the plain old filet (I am told that was just as good).
Our last stop of the day was at the Jordan River where Pastor Terry re-baptized Greg, Rhonda, and Larry. Ok, I have to admit I played a little trick on my dear friend Terry. You see the Jordan River has an abundance of fish that come up and nibble on your legs while you stand there baptizing people. It is truly a creepy feeling (almost downright hurts). Anyway, Terry came out of that water after the last person was baptized yelling, “Those fish kept biting my legs!!” Everyone died laughing…especially me because I sent him in there without telling him about it. He eventually figured it out and threatened to do very bad things to me!
We had a great day. Tonight will be spent eating dinner, a nice refreshing swim in the pool (Kelleen has been waiting to get into that water), and a good night’s sleep.

CROSSOVER IN THE LAND - DAY 1 tag:travellerspoint.com,2009-05-27:/blog/?domain=budwenzel&thisblog_entryid=11&entryid=162495 2009-06-01T13:29:29Z 2009-05-27T18:00:28Z Today was the first full day, and boy was it full. The group was overwhelmed with the amount of incredible sites and information they were exposed to today. It started with a short drive up the Mediterranean and some very practical information on Israel, the land, the people, and the culture. We even got some birding talk in for Pastor Terry.
The first stop was Caesarea Maritime where the group walked through the remains of Herod’s temple. They were all overwhelmed with the awesome sites. We spent some time in the judgment hall where Paul faced Felix and Agrippa. This was a perfect time to stop and reflect upon our own lives asking the Lord, “Am I really bound to your will like Paul was in saying that I will go wherever you want in my life even if it means chains?”
The next stop was the top of Mt. Carmel. Everyone was gasping at the incredible view of so many Biblical landmarks. It was also very moving to talk about Elijah’s challenge to the prophets of Baal. Again, some practical evaluation of our own lives…”Do we have any dependence upon false gods for our wellbeing?”
Just when they thought it couldn’t get any better, we stopped to walk all around Tel Megiddo where 25 separate civilizations built on top of one another throughout three thousand years of history. It was here that we took advantage of our best view of the valley of Jezreel where the battle of Armageddon will take place. We walked on stones and entrance walkways that Joshua, King Solomon, and King Ahab surely walked on. Robin finally got her chance to take a good look at some 1000 BC horse stables that kept 450 horses of King Solomon.
The day’s journey ended with a drive through Nazareth and our triumphant arrival at the Sea of Galilee where we will stay for the next 3 nights. The dinner table was filled with discussion of the day and much laughter. I think the whole group was a bit punchy from being so tired. I even saw Larry Twitchell get a little silly. What a fantastic group of people. They clearly love the Lord, and everyone is determined to study the Scriptures.
I am so sorry that I am unable to upload any pictures from the day. The internet seems extremely slow tonight so my computer keeps locking up. I will try again later. Trust me when I say they are all very good.

God has been gracious to us in many ways already. First of all, both of our flights arrived early. That is incredibly rare in international travel with connections. We had no trouble with our flights and everyone received their luggage. Also, as we were getting off the plane here in Tel Aviv we noticed that there was a British Airways plane offloading onto the same ramp. As it turns out it was Deana’s plane. We literally ran into her about 50 feet from the plane. This was so unexpected because we were supposed to arrive at different times.
Everyone was quite tired when we arrived to the hotel. But, no one was too tired to eat that wonderful food. Our dining room sat on the edge of the beach overlooking the Mediterranean where we were able to watch the sunset while eating. What a perfect and beautiful end to this day. I believe that is how tomorrow will start…with God surprising His people with the beauty and wonder of this incredible land.
We were delighted to meet our tour guide for the next 8 days. She is a dear sweet lady named Gilla, and it appears as if she has really connected with some of our folks already. They gathered and sat with her after dinner discussing the nature of Jews living in the land.
Tomorrow is a huge day beginning with a hotel departure of 8:30AM. I can’t wait to see there faces as they meet with new and exciting adventures in the Land.
Shalom!

I pray that those of you who are about to embark on this journey will be blessed with all the abundance of God's presence and intimacy. We know that God is eager to show Himself to those who desire Him. There are strong statements in the Bible concerning God's love for Israel the people....and this land. I believe with all my heart that God blesses those who care enough to seek out all that God loves so that they may love it too. Listen to what God says,

"Therefore you shall keep every commandment which I command yo9u today, that you may be strong, and go in and possess the land which you cross over to possess, and that you may prolong your days in the land which the Lord swore to give your fathers, to them and their descendants, 'a land flowing with milk and honey.' For the land which you go to possess is not like the land of Egypt from which you have come...but the land which you cross over to possess is a land of hills and valleys, which drinks water from the rain of heaven, a land for which the Lord your God cares; they eyes of the Lord your God are always on it, from the beginning of the year to the very end of the year." (Deuteronomy 11:8-12)

"The wilderness and the wasteland shall be glad for them, And the desert shall rejoice and blossom as the rose; It shall blossom abundantly and rejoice, Even with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, The excellence of Carmel and Sharon, They shall see the glory of the Lord, The excellence of our God." (Isaiah 35:1-2)

May you see deeply into the heart of God as you walk through the land of God's revelation and glory. The rose is blossoming so go and see...rejoice!

I will see you all tomorrow morning at the Continental check in ticket counter. Remember to be there no later than 8:45AM. And, Don't forget your passports!!!

Ok, all those going on this trip should be fully engaged in packing today. Although, I have heard that some have been practicing for some time now. I love to hear how excited everyone is! Here is something to keep in mind...It is very important to provide room for the things that you may be bringing back. I promise you that you will find many little souvenirs to bring back with you. Don't miscount the value of these items. One of the things we will learn on this trip is that people need physical reminders to connect them to spiritual truths. That is why the Lord instituted the Lord's Supper and Baptism. So, there may be something (it might even be a rock taken from the ground) that you can bring back with you to see, touch, and talk about in order to remind you of the moving experience of renewal. You may bring back something that you put in your living room that facilitates spiritual discussion every time people come to visit...you may acquire something that is deeply personal that serves as a reminder of God's truth...or, you may bring back a unique and valuable teaching tool that aids you in your small group class.
Let this trip be a physical exercise in "going to God". We should really evaluate our lives. What are we doing every day? What are my true priorities? Do I love God with all my heart, soul, and strength? Is God as real to me as he is to the Jewish people that I observed? These are all good questions for contemplation and prayer. He alone is worthy!

They are discovering new sites and artifacts at breakneck speed. And Israel is a treasure field of ancient and Biblical historical finds. It is said that you can't stick a shovel in the ground there without hitting a piece of valuable history.
We will be very blessed to see and experience the fruit of many of these archeological finds. These discoveries always verify and affirm the Bible as being accurate. Now...we don't use archeology to "prove" the Bible. The Bible does not need any physical historical evidence to be proven. It is true because it is the Word of God, and it lives in us. However, we can use archeology to affirm the historical accuracy of the Bible. And, more importantly it gives us a greater understanding of the context in order to more fully understand and apply the Bible to our lives. It sheds light, magnifies, and brings to life those stories that have become strangely distant in our minds.
So...bring your Bibles, your pens, and your shovels (ok, not your shovels) and we will "dig in" to the Bible to glean all we can from the incredible physical findings of Biblical history.

That will put us in Tel Aviv at 4:15PM on Tuesday, May 26th. The first evening in Israel will be spent getting acclimated for the most part. We will be met by our tour guide and bus driver who will take us to our first hotel. The short drive will be filled with introductions and some informative briefings. After a wonderful meal and maybe a walk on the beach of the Mediterranean, we will all head off to bed for a much needed full night's sleep. The next day will be absolutely full!Day_1__Tel..ias_026.jpg

The first day will begin with two locations that are very key to the success of the first church. We will see how Peter's vision and visit to Cornelius' house was perfectly timed in history to facilitate the Gospel being spread to everyone...especially the gentiles. You will also see an actual location of a "Bema" seat that Paul stood before after being arrested and taken to Caesarea. Just when you think you have seen all you can see for one day...we will ascend to the very top of Mt. Carmel to see where Elijah called on God in order to defeat the prophets of Baal. It won't be over...more that afternoon.

This may be one of our last trips that will be able to see Jerusalem mostly under the control of the Jewish people. I have heard reports that President Obama plans to announce his intentions to support the division of Jerusalem as the only means of moving forward in peace. He will be announcing this in the Middle East while we are there in Israel on June 4th. Let's plan to use our trip to pray for the peace of Jerusalem while we are walking in her streets. There will be some time for you to engage Jewish people on the cobblestone streets of Old Jerusalem. Please plan to use this as an opportunity to tell them how much you (we) support them as God's people who will one day regain absolute sovereign control over all the promise land. Jewish people are curiously interested in the overwhelming display of love and support they have recently received from Christians. They are very open to it! You will have the distinct privilege of actually "blessing" them.
As a practical matter, it would be a good idea to begin packing. Remember, you want to take simple and comfortable. It will be downright hot on some days. However, don't forget a light jacket or sweatshirt for a few cooler evenings. Also, don't forget your Bible. You may want to consider a small travel sized Bible that you can carry to some of the key sites. We will be reading from Scripture along the way...especially on the Southern steps of the Temple! Oh, I am getting excited! I can't wait to see how this experience transforms you.

Many people are asking about taking pictures as well. Of course, you will want to document this once in a lifetime trip. I would encourage you to photograph thoughtfully. One of the most common complaints that I have heard from my former trips has to do with people taking too many. Is that possible?? Yes, you can get so focused on picture taking that you miss some of the very insightful and informative nuggets from our tour guide. So, bring your camera, take meaningful pictures after the guide fully informs you at each site, and make sure to number and journal your pictures as the end of each day.
Let's close today's blog with this final thought: "The greatest impact of this trip will be from what occurs to you while you are in the land...not the pictures you bring home".

As we approach our departure to the Holy Land the excitement and anticipation continues to grow. There are many things to be excited about. This trip has the potential to be radically life changing. I believe with all of my heart that God blesses the sacrifice and effort to experience the land of the Bible. This kind of extreme effort shows no small degree of desire to know more about His Word and all His ways. We know that God reserves the deepest treasures of His heart for those who are faithful and diligent to search for them. "He who has ears to hear, let him hear".

bible-stud..-papger.jpg

Here are a few recommendations to assist you in preparing to gain the most from your personal journey through the land.

1. Extend your personal quiet time in God's Word just a little bit each day. Be careful that your excitement doesn't cause you to short this critical time alone with God. Try to add 5 minutes in personal prayer and Bible reading to your regular devotion every day for the next 7 days.

2. Refresh your memory by studying those passages that deal with Israel as God's chosen people of promise. Renew your understanding in the truth that God has a wonderful and glorious plan for the Jew (Romans 11:11-36).

3. Prayerfully consider all your current relationships with people. Do everything you can to be reconciled with those you are in conflict with, edify those who God has burdened your heart for, and serve those you have been placed next to. Do something obediently sacrificial for someone else this week. This will help prevent you from starting this journey from a self-serving foundation.

4. Let the excitement grow! You are going to be blessed beyond belief. The Bible is going to come to life like never before, and you are going to see the treasure of God's perfect stage for His revelation. You can expect for your soul to be quickened and your mind stimulated.

The weather forecast for tomorrow in Tiberias is 88 degrees/ Jerusalem 81 degrees!
